THE SMUGGLING STORY

In the late 1980s, the California coastline became a highway of risk and reward. Under moonlight, small crews carried tons of marijuana north from Mexico — racing the tide, dodging patrols, and gambling with freedom.

For John Buzzanca, the thrill of the run promised easy money. But in 1991, it all came crashing down. Arrested, exposed, and facing prison time, the so‑called “smuggler’s life” ended as abruptly as it began.

What he didn’t know: the storm ahead wouldn’t come from the ocean. It would come from a courtroom.

One wrong move meant prison, or worse. I learned that the hard way.
